Mission Statement

The purpose of the SoCA organization is four-fold: to support current Master of Clinical Anatomy (“MCA”) students in their academic and professional pursuits, to promote interpersonal bonding amongst the MCA cohorts, to promote program information to prospective MCA students, and to facilitate MCA outreach to younger students interested in health fields.

MCA

A Typical Week as a SoCA Member:

We meet once per week for a general member meeting at a pre-determined time that fits in all members’ course schedules. The executive team presents updates and seeks the opinions and thoughts of general members for professional development, social, and outreach ideas! Every few weeks, a social event for SoCA members will be held, organized by the Social Secretary. Similarly, every few weeks, there may be an outreach/volunteer/ACB social event opportunity where we can get involved in our community and make interdepartmental connections!

MCA2 Graduation Party!

The graduating MCA cohort was celebrated by fellow MCA students and faculty from CCOM and the ACB department who teach MCA courses! We all gathered over some food, a great game of “fun-fact” bingo, and celebration for our graduating members, some even being granted awards for their hard work in the program.

MCA Students

ACB Holiday Party!

All faculty and students in the Anatomy and Cell Biology department were invited to the Reunion Brewery in downtown Iowa City to celebrate the holiday season over a meal and drinks! This annual party gives students and faculty a chance to get to know one another outside the classroom setting.

Murder Mystery Social Event!

A Murder Mystery dinner party was put on by our organization’s Social Secretary! The members of the MCA cohorts gathered for an entertaining evening of solving a mystery and sharing a potluck-style meal! This was the first major social event of the Spring 2025 semester!

Secret Cupid!

Secet Cupid was an event created by our Social Secretary! Everyone was assigned a “secret cupid” to buy a Valentine’s Day gift for. We exchanged gifts during the week of Valentine’s Day during our weekly meeting and were eager to make each other smile!

Crip Camp Screening!

Members of SoCA attended a screening of the documentary, Crip Camp, hosted by our Advocacy Chair. Crip Camp is a documentary about disability rights and about the lives of individuals who took part in the Disability Rights Movement.[RS1]

Attendance

According to our Constitution, all general members must attend all general member meetings (once per week for 15 weeks of the semester) to receive 15 attendance points. 16 points are required by the end of the semester with that additional point being obtained through attendance at social or outreach events planned by our organization or through the ACB department. This is important to keep in mind when considering membership in our student organization!
